Ana and her four children came to Switzerland from Georgia seeking international protection more than five years ago. Initially, they arrived in Switzerland as a family accompanied by their husband and father.
During the joint asylum procedure, Ana realized that she could no longer tolerate her husband’s domestic violence as it was having a devastating impact on her and her children. She had the courage to disclose the violence against her and the children to the Swiss authorities and a psychiatrist. In a new asylum procedure, Ana underlined that she and her children would be unable to receive adequate State protection against domestic violence in Georgia.
Despite that, the Swiss authorities rejected Ana and her children’s requests for international protection. The family seeks to protect their rights on the international level before the United Nations bodies: their complaints were registered and are currently under consideration of the Committee on the Elimination of Discrimination against Women and the Committee on the Rights of the Child.
In Switzerland, Ana and her children are considered as rejected asylum seekers. They stay at the return center with inadequate living conditions. According to
the findings of the National Commission for the Prevention of Torture, such conditions are not appropriate for women and children. Ana aims to file complaints against such conditions to national authorities and the Committee on the Rights of the Child.
